A jewel is missing from a museum, and Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) tries to find the thief as bodies pile up across the city. Holmes is sure that the crime is the work of Giles Conover (Miles Mander), and the recent string of murders suggests that the criminal, having stashed the pearl alongside the belongings of an unsuspecting Londonite, has ordered a henchman to find it. With Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) at his side, Holmes finds himself in mortal danger as he closes in on his man.

The Sherlock Holmes story “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons” is the source for not one, but two entries in the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce series of Holmes films produced by Universal. This film is a very close adaptation of the story, while Dressed to Kill, produced two years later at the end of the series, is more of an “inspired by” situation. The basic idea is the same: there’s a secret hidden in one of several identical knick-knacks, and bad guys are willing to murder to get ahold of it. Here, as in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original story, the thing is the Borgia Pearl, a gem with a long history of bringing misfortune and death to those who possess it.

The Pearl of Death, the ninth film in the Rathbone/Bruce series of Sherlock Holmes films, was inspired by or loosely based on the Conan Doyle story "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons." In the Conan Doyle story, Lestrade consults Holmes to solve the mystery of why someone is breaking into homes and smashing plaster busts of Napoleon. At this point in the story, they know nothing about the pearl. Holmes eventually deduces that the famous black pearl of the Borgias was hidden in a plaster bust of Napoleon. The pearl had been stolen from the Prince of Colonna by the Princess' maid, and an accomplice hid the pearl in a bust of Napoleon. The only person murdered was Pietro, the brother of the maid, and he was killed by the accomplice who hid the pearl.
